Cumberland Court - your home in the heart of Campus!

Cumberland CourtCumberland Court is 100% part of Cumberland College. It's a great option for students who are starting their journey into student life and want the chance to make friends, live in a safe place, be really close to the action on campus, and have fun!

How it works

The Court is a group of supervised residences (two to six bedroom units) on Cumberland Street with 101 residents. Its staff includes four Residential Assistants (RA's) whose job it is to be there to help you out, as well as the Residential Manager, who lives on site.

The location is superb - right across the road from the biochemistry building, St David Lecture Theatre, the PhysEd department, or two minutes from the Clocktower, the hub of the main academic campus.

Each flat is furnished with whiteware, beds, desks, bookcases and furniture in the common areas, so it just needs your personal touch to make it home for the year!

The Cumberland Court Terms and Conditions of Residence can be found on our Terms and Conditions page.

Meals

For 2010 Cumberland Court residents will have their evening meal at the University Union building, less than one block from Cumberland Court! Lunch is held at Cumberland College and breakfast supplies are even delivered to the Court so you can eat in the luxury of your own flat!

Tutorials and Study

Free tutorials on many of the first year papers are provided and a range of study skills workshops are offered. The Court has it's own central common 'hub' which has tutorial/study space for your use.

Wireless internet access will be available in each flat in 2010 - user charges will apply

Fees you can afford

The charges for Cumberland Court reflect the fact you are in a fully supervised flatting village. For 2009 the weekly rate is $276 - a huge saving on being in a Residential College but with all the benefits!

College Facilities

Places to study!

Here at Cumbie we have a huge focus on achieving your academic goals, so we want to make sure you have the facilities you need to make that happen. Obviously your bedroom comes equipped with a study desk but here are a few facilties for you...

Computers at CumberlandComputer Suite

You'll never be stuck for a computer or a place to print with our massive computer suite. All residents have access to the 46 PCs which are linked to the University Network, and which have full internet and email access.

Wireless

In 2010 wireless internet access, courtesy of the University network, will be available in the majority of our common areas (and some bedrooms). From the luxury of your own laptop you'll be able to access all the internet and email you could want!

Study Rooms

Cumbie comes equipped with four rooms available for studying, group meetings or tutorial. These rooms are the location of our fantastic tutorials (taken by people who have been there and done that) and our study groups.

Help is on hand!

Our dedicated team is on hand to help you out academically when you need help. Any one of our 25 strong residential team will be happy to sit down with you to look over that essay or help you solve that academic dilemma...and if they can't do it they'll find someone who can!

University Library

Did we mention we have the best location in Dunedin? Not only are we 5 minutes from town on one side but we're only 5 minutes from campus on the other. The huge University of Otago Information Services Building (a flash name for library) is just down the road and has all the study space and computers (not to mention books!) you need if you want to get out of Cumbie.

Places to play!

We know there is more to a balanced life than studying and sleeping - you have to have plenty of places to have fun as well! In this regard our facilities are second to none...check em out:

Cumbie Sport CourtSport Court

Cumbie boasts the only Astro-turf sport court with full size tennis court at Otago. But it's not confined to just tennis - we have facilities and equipment for soccer, netball, basketball, cricket, dodgeball...the list goes on and on. We even have puppies you can play with here!

The sport court is the site of many a Cumbie victory over other colleges in our many sports exchanges and the place where the annual staff vs residents netball game takes place.

Common Spaces

Sometimes you just a space to sit and chat with friends or have a coffee. Cumbie has a number of spaces for this, the most prominent being our relaxed and comfy dining room (with the drinks machine available all day!). We also have our formal common room, the Green Room, with it's leather couches and gas fire opening out onto the beautiful private garden with it's external gas fire and BBQ. The perfect spot to sit and read the paper, a book, chat to some friends or catch up on some study.

TV and Cinema Rooms

We don't believe in watching TV or movies on silly little TV's - that's why none of our TV's is under 40inches! The Castle and Cumbeland Lounges are the perfect place to sit back and watch a movie or Sky Digital on the huge flat screens or in the Castle Lounge you can watch the All Blacks play on the absolutely massive projector screen.

We also have 3 smaller 'Mini-Cinema' Rooms with huge flat screens and X-Boxes for all your movie watching and gaming needs.

Cumberland Lawn

Even though we are smack bang in the middle of Dunedin we can still boast a wonderful set of grounds. Great on a sunny day for relaxing or throwing around a ball!

Music RoomMusic Room

Like to tickle the ivories or strum a tune? Our music room is the perfect place to keep that practice up or learn something musical!
